Sophie Wilmes to be first woman PM of Belgium

Sophie Wilmes to be first woman PM of Belgium

Sophie Wilmes has been appointed interim prime minister.

Belgium’s first female prime minister in its 189-year history has taken office, after Sophie Wilmès was named as the head of the country’s next caretaker government.

Belgium’s king has appointed Sophie Wilmes as the country’s new prime minister, making her the first woman to hold the office.

Ms Wilmes, a centre-right liberal from the country’s French-speaking community, replaces Charles Michel at the head of the country’s caretaker government.

Current Prime Minister, Michel is set to take over as European Council president on December 1.

Wilmes, who is seen as an ally of Michel’s and was first elected to parliament in 2014, was chosen by a ministerial committee.
