The nation is celebrating the 72nd Army Day today in honour of the soldiers who serve the country selflessly.

This day is celebrated on this day because Field Marshal KM Cariappa took command of the Indian Army from General Francis Butcher on the same day in 1949.

The day is celebrated in the form of parades and other military shows in the national capital New Delhi as well as in all headquarters.

The Indian Army is the land-based branch and the largescomponent of the Indian Armed Forces.

The motto of the Indian Army says "Service before self".

The Indian Army was founded almost 125 years ago by the British on April 1, 1895. The Indian army was established on 1st April, but Army Day in India is celebrated on 15th January.

According to the Global Fire Power Index 2017, India's army is considered the world's fourth strongest army. According to this power index, America, Russia, and China have a better army than India. India's neighbour Pakistan is ranked 13th in this list.
